European swimming, mixed 4×1250 open water relay team turns gold
Extraordinary day for Domenico Acerenza, who a few hours earlier had won gold in the 10km
Italy wins a gold medal in the 4×1250 open water at the European Swimming Championships in Rome, staged in Ostia. The Italian relay team, consisting of Rachele Bruni, Ginevra Taddeucci, who replaced Giulia Gabbrielleschi, and men Gregorio Paltrinieri and Domenico Acerenza in the first leg, finished ahead of Hungary (silver) and France (bronze).
Extraordinary performance by the Italian athletes, who led the race from the start, except for a brief overtaking by the Hungarian Kristof Rasovszky, in the fourth fraction, right on Domenico Acerenza, the new European champion in the 10km held on Sunday morning. It was actually a tactic that of the Potenza native, who let his opponent vent and then punished him at the 500m turn to the finish, leaving his rival on the spot and closing with more than 10″ advantage. One more gold for swimming Italy, in a truly unforgettable European kermesse.
