Us Open qualifiers, Italy puts on a big show: eight Azzurri in the final act
Agamenone wins derby against Marcora, among women advances Elisabetta Cocciaretto
At the end of the second round of the qualifying draw at the Us Open, Italy takes as many as seven tennis players to the next round – the one that will give a place in the main draw – with the addition of Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the women’s tournament. On the night, Riccardo Bonadio, Raul Brancaccio, Flavio Cobolli, Matteo Arnaldi, Francesco Maestrelli, Franco Agamenone, who won the derby against Roberto Marcora 7-6 (3) 2-6 6-1, and Andreas Seppi all earned passes to the final match.
The indestructible Bolzano native, from the height of his 38 years, beat Canadian Vasek Pospisil 3-6 6-2 7-5 and will now play for access to the main draw for what could be his 19th consecutive appearance at the Us Open: on his way is the fearsome Argentine Facundo Bagnis, number 106 in the ATP rankings.
Francesco Passaro and Stefano Travaglia, on the other hand, drop out, beaten by France’s Hugo Grenier and China’s Yibing Wu, respectively. In the women’s draw, having filed the exits of Lucrezia Stefaninin and Sara Errani, there was the advancement to the next round of Elisabetta Cocciaretto, who defeated Andorran Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva.
