First WTA title for Elisabetta Cocciaretto

It is a Sunday to remember, that of July 30, 2023, for Elisabetta Cocciaretto. Indeed, the 22-year-old tennis player won a title on the WTA Tour for the first time, defeating France’s Clara Burel in three sets on clay in Lausanne.

7-5, 4-6, 6-4 were the partials of a match that lasted two hours and forty-five minutes and gave enormous personal and professional satisfaction to the Ancona native, who reached the final of the WTA 250 tournament, the last of the clay-court season, after beating, in order, Switzerland’s Naef, Argentina’s Riera, Russia’s Avanesyan and Hungary’s Bondar.

Cocciaretto was in her second final in a tournament of this caliber: the first was in January in Hobart, Australia, another WTA 250: but then she was defeated by Lauren Davis in two sets, thus having to postpone her appointment with her first victory in a circuit tournament.

Previously, the Ancona-born athlete had won two tournaments in the intermediate circuit, the WTA 125: in October 2022 she defeated Magda Linette of Poland in Tampico, Mexico, while this year, in April, she managed to overcome another Italian athlete, veteran Sara Errani, in the final of the San Luis Potosi tournament, also in the Central American country.
