John McEnroe’s words.

John McEnroe spoke before the start of the Us Open with Corriere della Sera: “Nadal aside, who is coming back from injury and whose form is all to be seen, I see a shortlist of names. Medvedev, the defending champion. Alcaraz, who has cashed in some defeats but, my God, is a great athlete with fire inside. The unpredictable Kyrgios. Fritz is playing just fine. And your Sinner: I’ve been saying it for years, for me Jannik is a multiple Slam winner. The transition between Big 3 and Next Gen is proving slower than expected, I see a similar future in women’s tennis: a different king for each Slam. Then again, an extraordinary trio like Nadal, Djokovic and Federer, capable of winning so much at the same time, will never be around again.”

Sinner chapter: “I see Jannik grown physically, taller, maybe he has some problems adjusting to the new size, it happened to my children when they were in college, too. I have one piece of advice: stop reading the comments on social media! At Wimbledon he made a quantum leap. He has little to blame himself for: when Djokovic rises that high, there is nothing to be done. Jannik is an open yard: let’s see what happens in the next six months, in the meantime he has to consolidate himself as a top 10 player.”

He concludes on Berrettini: “Matteo has been penalized by the Covid in London and the end of the pandemic protected ranking. I don’t know if he will play free of discomfort in New York. Right now Jannik has surpassed Matteo: he is the closest to winning a Major. But things can change very quickly.”
