Matteo Berrettini sincere after suffering passage to quarters
The Roman’s words after his success against Davidovich Fokina
It took Matteo Berrettini five sets and almost four hours of play to gain access to the US Open quarterfinals. The Roman himself spent important words towards the opponent of the day, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who forced him into a marathon of five sets and almost four hours, yielding (even physically) only in the last remnant of the match.
“I’m proud of the result,” Berrettini said after the match, at the tournament organizers’ microphones. “I didn’t start the way I wanted to, I went down a set and a break, but I managed to fight back also thanks to those who kept encouraging me throughout the match. My opponent played very well, I perhaps felt a little tired.”
On the physical problems that affected Davidovich Fokina’s final match, Berrettini added, “I didn’t want to end the match like that, but in the end it mattered to win.”
