F1, Red Bull now risks: ‘Should be penalized’
Red Bull is under indictment for an alleged budget cap violation.
The accusation against Red Bull of alleged budget cap violations shakes Formula 1. The Fia has announced audits of the 2021 accounts, and major penalties could be coming for the Austrian team. Haas team principal Gunther Steiner also had his say on the matter: “I don’t know exactly where they went over the budget cap because they say they understood it differently, you have to figure that out first and then see if they went over the budget cap and are not in compliance. If the car is underweight, even if you precisely claim that you understood it differently you get disqualified. Now I’m not saying they have to disqualify them, there will be a penalty, I don’t know all the elements in detail,” are the words reported by Formulapassion.
“Is it normal that there is now talk related to 2021? No, it creates a confusion that there is no need for, the championship ended ten months ago. When the budget cap regulation was made it was discussed, no one thought of going outside, you have to understand whether it was illegal or not, if something was done that is not legal there has to be a penalty. If there are gray areas? Gray areas are always there, like in technical regulations. You have to have a good understanding of where you went outside to take out the gray and make it black or white in the future. To hear the amount they went outside of, it can’t be a mistake….”
And again, “I don’t know if it’s intentionality, maybe they thought they were correcting the course of the year and then the year ended and at the end there was no more room to maneuver. Infringement of 10 million? There are certain expenses that we all have, they are fixed expenses that you cannot change. The amount overrun by Red Bull is on the development of the car so it’s millions not out of 140 but out of 70 that are the development of the car and so the percentage is very high. I wouldn’t want to overrun.”
