Virtus Bologna, Sergio Scariolo points the way ahead of Madrid
The words of Sergio Scariolo
Sergio Scariolo presented the challenge between Virtus Bologna and Real Madrid, the fifth day of the Euroleague scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 27, at 8:45 p.m. at the “Wizink Center.” In the last round Virtus fell against Partizan Serbs while Real overcame Red Star.
These are the words of the coach of the bianconeri ahead of the challenge with Real: “Real Madrid is obviously one of the top teams in this competition, in the last ten years they have always remained at the highest level, they have played several Final Fours and some of the players we have already seen in those circumstances. It’s going to be a really tough challenge for us, but I think we’ve made some progress since last week: we’ve worked on the team’s chorus, some players have improved their form. I think we could extend the minutes of good basketball then obviously against Real Madrid it is never enough.
“Our goal, however, is to stay focused on ourselves: to improve, we have to treat the ball well, take better shots and increase our desire and ability to share the ball,” Scariolo continued. “We will have to be solid on defense, especially defensive rebounds. We have several goals in front of us that are difficult to achieve against a strong team like Real but at the same time we have a clear idea of what we are up against. We go to Madrid to improve and compete.”
Last season, Virtus Bologna saw the confirmation of the Scudetto it won in 2021 slip away only in the playoff final, lost 4-2 to Olimpia Milano. The highlight of the Felsinians’ year, however, came on May 11, with the conquest of the Eurocup, won in the final against the Turkish Bursaspor. This success gave Scariolo’s men a pass for the 2022-23 Euroleague season, a competition the Bolognese had not participated in for 14 years.
