The defender’s career ends with a victory

It’s now official: Piqué has retired from soccer. His final match, at Camp Nou against Almería (a 2-0 win for the Blaugrana), was the perfect opportunity to bid a fitting farewell to his fans. It was an emotional evening, with Laporta, president of the Blaugrana club, presenting the now-former defender with a silver plaque after the match.

Speaking to LaLiga TV, Piqué explained his decision to call it quits midseason: “You always think about playing one more year; you never think about retirement. But sometimes things turn out a certain way, and you have to make a decision. These past six months have been very difficult. Today was a relief. I’ll always carry this unforgettable moment with me,” said the 35-year-old Piqué with emotion.
