Tennis, new star enters as reserve at ATP Finals: goodbye Next Gen
Holger Rune has withdrawn from the ATP Finals Next Gen.
Having hoisted himself, thanks to his fantastic comeback victory over Novak Djokovic, to tenth place in the 2022 ATP Race, Holger Rune in one fell swoop is in danger of even playing in the Nitto ATP Finals, those reserved for the top eight tennis players of the 2022 calendar year.
Already qualified for the Next Gen ATP Finals, those destined for the best eight Under-21 players, the Dane will not participate in the Milan event, which can already count on the presence of Lorenzo Musetti and Francesco Passaro. The injury that forced Carlos Alcaraz to forfeit the ‘big boys’ tournament, which is being played in Turin, makes Rune the first reserve in the competition that last year saw the triumph of Alexander Zverev.
“Of course I’m going to Turin, I’m out of one. I wish everyone else that I don’t have to play because I want them to stay healthy, but at the same time it would be great to play the tournament,” said the fresh winner of Paris-Bercy. In the Next Gen tournament, the Scandinavian’s place will be filled by Matteo Arnaldi, thus bringing the number of Italian athletes participating in the competition to three.
