Lewis Hamilton polished up in Sao Paulo: his promise to Brazil
A promise for an audience that adores him.
Lewis Hamilton will start on the front row in the Sao Paulo Grand Prix after the Sprint Race won by teammate George Russell. However, the Mercedes cars will be first and second on the grid because of the penalty imposed on Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari. And for the seven-time world champion, fresh from receiving honorary citizenship from Brazil, the goal on Sunday is clear.
“Good evening, Brazil. I have to improve my Portuguese, but I’m working on it,” Hamilton began at the end of the Sprint Race by addressing the stands. Then he added, “I’m overjoyed, because this weekend so far has been incredible thinking also how difficult yesterday was. Meanwhile, congratulations to George, but this win is dedicated to everyone at Mercedes. Their input has been fantastic, the efforts throughout the year have been so much, and it is incredible to have achieved this result.”
The goal of seeing a Mercedes back on top is therefore as close as it has ever been this year. “We will give it our all, no doubt. Hopefully we won’t suffer too much degradation tomorrow. We also hope the weather will be good, and then we can have a good race,” assured Hamilton. Who then, on the suggestion of giving the Brazilian public a victory, let loose: “Of course. A win here, for Brazil, would be incredible.”
