“If he goes to Lourdes Berrettini is out of water…”

Tennis Italy will present itself to the Davis Cup challenge against the fearsome United States without its stars: in fact, after Jannik Sinner’s forfeit, on Sunday afternoon came also that of Matteo Berrettini, who entrusted to his Instagram profile a long explanation about his unavailability ahead of the prestigious tournament reserved for national teams.

On social media, the Roman tennis player’s many fans did not hide their disappointment, mostly taking it out on bad luck – this is certainly not the first injury of the year for the 2021 Wimbledon finalist – not failing, in some cases, to also harbor doubts about their idol’s general physical condition.

“If he goes to Lourdes Berrettini is out of water. What the heck! Once we had chances…,” Aribaus commented on Twitter. He is echoed by Zilletto, who bitterly states : “And we’ll win Davis next year too,” and Lello P., who makes a more general analysis : “I wouldn’t want Berrettini to follow in the bad luck footsteps of the great Del Potro. The strongest right-man in the world.Too soon the jinx deprived us of a Champion who was persecuted to no end. But Matteo still has an age on his side to make up for it,” he concludes with hope. “Can one say what a jinx?” is instead the lapidary comment of Alexander P.

More cutting is the comment of user Tywin L., who writes: “If Berrettini had a decent physical condition (I’m not saying Nadal-like, but decent), this moment in history could have allowed him to win a lot more, really a lot more.”
