Davis Cup, Filippo Volandri still has doubts ahead of quarterfinals
Volandri’s words on the eve of the match with the U.S.
Italy captain Filippo Volandri made some statements to Sky Sport microphones ahead of the Davis Cup quarterfinal match against the United States that will see the Azzurri without Matteo Berrettini and Jannik Sinner, both injured.
It was from here that Volandri started, “The absence of the first two players by ranking can make a difference but I told the group that we have to squeeze even tighter and make a shield. The guys are looking forward to getting started. We are doing well and we are trying to take advantage of the few hours of practice allowed on the power plant.”
“I still have time to think about the lineup. No one knows what game they will play, I have asked them to make themselves available regardless of the needs of the team,” admitted the Azzurri captain, who has yet to clear his doubts about the lineup.
Matteo Berrettini, although injured, will still be in Malaga: “He will arrive on Wednesday and will be part of the team, in my memory I don’t remember an injured player following the team to make the group,” Volandri stressed.
“Fritz might arrive fatigued, but the players are used to it. At the end of the season, though, it’s okay for someone not to arrive in condition. By choice they have a team of only four players and they left Ram who won the ATP Finals in doubles. I think about my team and giving my best, then we will see who will be on the other side,” Filippo added.
“I will be happy if I see a step forward in our growth. After Bologna we made great strides, I will be satisfied if we take another step. Our path is long-term and has just started with a very young team,” concluded the former tennis player.
