Berrettini believes in miracle

Matteo Berrettini, out due to injury in the Davis Cup match against the United States but still on the bench to support the Azzurri, gave a lengthy interview to La Repubblica.

The Roman tennis player explained the reason for his presence: “Well, a year and a half ago, maybe more, Filippo Volandri called me to tell me that as coach he wanted to create a project, a group. An idea that I shared from the beginning, and we saw that in Davis this is the most important thing. We demonstrated that yesterday. Eh, when I saw that I was late in preparation I warned, I told the guys that I wanted to be there anyway. Why? I think I can still help out. And also because last year, after Turin and the injury, I saw that I was suffering three times as much from home. I’m glad a positive message came through, that’s what teamwork is all about.”

“Eh, team building is a complex thing, we usually keep to ourselves, our own teams. But when we do, and we do, we benefit. For example, you play a game, Secuency, and you don’t think about the next day’s game, and even then you do the good of the group. Shenanigans? Mah, sitting in the same seats all the time. In the past there was a chorus, then we abolished it. It was also in Spanish … however, I feel that there is a lot of adrenaline, energy. Sinner has been writing and supporting us on the chat, he is also recovering,” continued Italy’s number two.

“It’s more stressful than playing them, as it happens when I see my brother’s matches. On TV, then, we don’t talk about it. Live it’s better, you understand the moment. You yell more, so better in presence. Then I know the players, so I think I gave some tips and I don’t know if it made a difference but I was glad to do it,” he then commented on watching the matches from the stands.

He then left open a small window for a miraculous recovery, “Playing? I would even play on one foot. I am recovering faster than I thought, this morning a very good training, but the team is going very strong and you have to be objective to make the best of the team, and the best now is for others to play. If the miracle happens? I don’t know, we haven’t even talked about it. I will still give support in any way.”

“On paper, in Davis, you don’t have to look at the numbers but the will to win. I know the Canadians. But the technical things I will say in the morning, before the match. But again, the team, and this is the good thing, is coming out.” Prediction? What a question: let’s win 2-1. Is that okay?” concluded Berrettini.
