Likely lineups

Portugal-Uruguay, scheduled for 8 p.m. Italian time, will close the second day of the group stage at the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates won in the opener against Ghana 3-2. Some changes are expected among the Portuguese ranks: favored is William Carvalho, who could take Otavio’s place among the midfield three. The other ballot is on the left flank, between Joao Felix and Rafael Leao.

The Diego Alonso-led national team did not go beyond 0-0 in the first match against South Korea. The South Americans, who will field a 4-3-3, will rely on Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez, Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde and, of course, ‘Pistolero’ Luis Suarez to unhinge the Iberian rearguard.

Probable formations

PORTUGAL (4-3-3): Diogo Costa; Cancelo, Dias, Pereira, Guerreiro; Silva., Neves, Carvalho; Fernandes, Ronaldo, Felix. Ct. Santos.

URUGUAY (4-3-3): Rochet; Caceres, Godin, Gimenez, Olivera; Valverde, Bentancur, Vecino; Pellistri, Suarez, Nunez. Ct. Alonso.
