Wawrinka open-hearted about Federer
Stan Wawrinka, great friend and rival of his compatriot Roger Federer, recently spoke about him during an episode of the program “Aparté” that airs on Canal Plus.
The Swiss tennis player dedicated nice words for the Basel phenomenon: “When I arrived on the tour, Roger Federer was already at the top. I saw him from the beginning as an older brother. We trained together often and he helped me a lot. I had the honor and luck to be able to compare myself with him both in training and during tournaments.”
“In the Davis Cup we shared many wonderful moments,” Wawrinka continued. “As time went on, our relationship intensified and we became full-fledged friends. My level went up and we helped each other out. I owe him a lot.”
Roger Federer has won 20 Grand Slam events, including as many as eight Wimbledons, an all-time record in men’s tennis history. The Swiss also became the oldest tennis player in the history of the Open Era to hold the top position in the ATP rankings.
A tennis legend and inimitable for his elegant strokes, Federer announced his retirement on September 15, 2022, playing his last match, in doubles, at the Laver Cup paired with eternal rival and friend Rafael Nadal.
