Juventus, not just Del Piero: a former great bids to return
Trezeguet runs for office amid corporate chaos: “If he calls me I will come back”
David Trezeguet runs to the rescue of his Juve, which is in the midst of a corporate crisis after the en bloc resignation of the board of directors and president Andrea Agnelli. To the Gazzetta dello Sport, the former French striker expresses all his support for his former club, and like Del Piero, he bids for a comeback.
“At Juve I lived ten years as a player and seven at the club. I did the sporting director course in Spain to get to know another type of soccer. In 2021 I chose to close as an ambassador and return on the sporting side, there was no opportunity to do that at Juve but for me Juve is always home. For Juve I am there: if they call me back, I will come back. I strongly believe that former players should have an important role in clubs.”
“There are other people who have to decide but I think I can be useful: I have known Juve on the field and at the desk. Del Piero, Chiellini, Buffon and Marchisio have all given so much to Juve and are suited to different roles. Each one has his own specificity. My model for the club is Bayern Munich: clear ideas, a link to the past given by former players, a serious project.”
On Andrea Agnelli: “He has done an extraordinary job: the stadium, the sports center, the second team… He has been an example. Now John Elkann will have to figure out how to manage the situation and he will have to be given time. Even in 2006 it was a quick change. I decided to stay because I felt the need to stay. It was very natural, seeing the club in difficulty.”
