Angelo Binaghi has doubts about opting for Matteo Berrettini
Binaghi’s comment on the choice of Volandri
Italian Tennis Federation President Angelo Binaghi, a few days after the Italian national team’s elimination from the Davis Cup at the hands of Canada, commented on captain Filippo Volandri’s choice to field Matteo Berrettini and not Lorenzo Sonego alongside Fabio Fognini in the doubles due to the unavailability of Simone Bolelli.
“I was surprised to see Matteo Berrettini employed, I didn’t even know he was able to play. I expected Sonego to be employed, I thought it was the most logical solution, especially since he was on the ball, like Auger-Aliassime who in fact, although not a doubles player, dragged Canada to the final victory. But I don’t have all the information that Volandri had to decide,” Binaghi said in an interview with ‘Il Messaggero’.
The Federtennis president then pointed out which, in his opinion, was the best Italian success of 2022: “The most resounding is Berrettini’s victory at Queen’s, because of how it matured, following yet another injury: a feat.”
