Novak Djokovic’s secret: “This is how I discovered tennis.”
A very intimate account that helps to understand how the champion was able to become such.
Novak Djokovic spoke at a promotional event in Marbella, and here he revealed how as a child he chose tennis as his sport. An almost random decision, and different from the paths his relatives had taken before him, but one that would allow him over the years to become one of the discipline’s most famous and successful performers.
“Sometimes I think back to when I was a child, and the ways in which I approached tennis,” Djokovic recounted. “No one in my family had played it before me. In fact, our sport was skiing. My father in particular had played it when he was a boy. I fell in love with it instead, but it happened quite by accident.”
“In front of my family’s restaurant they built three tennis courts, all very close together. They were no more than 15 meters apart. I was just 4-5 years old, but I became curious to go and see the people playing that sport. Whenever I could I watched them. Then I asked my parents to explain to me how to play the game, and when they gave me a racket it all started.”
