Portugal: Fernando Santos removed after Cristiano Ronaldo case
The Lisbon Federation has decided on a change in technical leadership
Fernando Santos is no longer Portugal’s technical commissioner: the Lisbon coach, who has led the Lusitanian national team since 2014, was removed from the post after the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
The quarterfinals won by Portugal, plagued by the Cristiano Ronaldo affair, who was excluded from the starting eleven in both the round of 16 against Switzerland and the quarterfinal lost to Morocco, were not enough.
Fernando Santos, who won a European championship and a Nations League at the helm of the Portuguese national team, had denied clashes with Ronaldo but was openly criticized by CR7’s relatives and friends, starting with partner Georgina. The federation will announce his replacement in the coming weeks. Mourinho’s name is also being floated.
