Australian Open, Matteo Berrettini has his facts straight
Matteo Berrettini has clear ideas ahead of the Australian Open
Matteo Berrettini spoke to local media ahead of his debut in the United Cup, the new mixed-team competition that will see Italy involved in Group E with Brazil and Norway. The Roman tennis player will make his debut on Friday, December 30 against Brazilian Thiago Monteiro.
The Italian appeared enthusiastic about playing this event, “I like playing in Australia, I like the conditions, I like the crowd and I especially like the energy that this place can transmit to me. I have good memories with Italy in competitions like this, we reached the final in 2021 so it’s nice to be here again with these guys. My hope, of course, is to build up match, confidence and trust ahead of the commitment in Melbourne.”
So he said he was confident ahead of the Australian Open: “I’m getting more and more confident in my abilities and in the Slams I’m getting to the bottom a lot, so I can’t help but be excited about having another chance here.”
“I think it’s almost exclusively a matter of experience. The more you play against the greats, the better you get, the more you learn how to beat them. And then to actually do it. When I played against Novak at Wimbledon I think it was his 30th Slam final. For me it was the first one. Of course he’s also an amazing player, so it’s not just that. Anyway for me it was an honor and it’s still an honor to play against them, I hope to win next time,” Berrettini concluded, throwing down the gauntlet to Melbourne king Novak Djokovic, holder of as many as nine Australian Slam titles.
