This is the lengthy message shared on his social accounts, “After careful and thoughtful consideration, I announce my immediate retirement from club and international soccer.
I feel incredibly fortunate to have fulfilled my dream of playing the sport I love. It has given me some of the best moments of my life. In 17 seasons I have reached lofty heights that will be impossible to replicate, no matter what the next chapter holds for me.
From my first touch at Southampton to my last with LAFC and everything in between, it has shaped a club career for which I am immensely proud and grateful. Playing and becoming captain of my country 111 times was truly a dream come true.
To show my gratitude to everyone who played their part in this journey seems impossible. I feel indebted to many people for helping to change my life and shape my career in a way I could never have dreamed of when I started at age 9.
To my previous clubs, Southampton, Tottenham, Real Madrid and finally LAFC. To all my previous managers and coaches, back room staff, teammates, all the passionate fans, my agents, my amazing friends and family-the impact you have had is immeasurable.
My parents and sister, without your dedication in those early days, without such a strong foundation, I would not be writing this statement now, so thank you for setting me on this path and for your unwavering support.
