Federica Brignone and Sofia Goggia, new challenge
Italy, summoned
Nine are the nine summoned by technical director Gianluca Rulfi for the World Cup weekend dedicated to speed on the Austrian track of St. Anton, where the women’s circuit returns after last year’s break. The program includes a downhill at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 14, and a supergiant at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 15, with live television coverage on Raisport and Eurosport. At the start will be Marta Bassino, Federica Brignone, Elena Curtoni, Nadia Delago, Nicol Delago, Sofia Goggia, Roberta Melesi, Laura Pirovano and Karoline Pichler.
The super-giant ranking sees Curtoni in the lead with 120 points, ahead of Suter with 116 and Shiffrin-Mowinckel at 100 with Goggia at 90; the downhill ranking sees Goggia alone in the lead with 380 points, followed by Suter at 218 and Stuhec at 192. On Thursday 12 and Friday 13, the schedule includes two days of time trials. Italy boasts two podiums in the Austrian resort in the 2021 edition thanks to Sofia Goggia’s victory in the downhill and Marta Bassino’s second place in the supeg. In the annals of skiing, the Italian women’s team also recorded Bibiana Perez’s third place in combined in 1993 and Daniela Merighetti’s second in downhill in 2013.
