A reborn Andy Murray freezes Matteo Berrettini out: immediate knockout in Melbourne
Former world number one Andy Murray surprises Matteo Berrettini at Australian Open
Matteo Berrettini immediately knocked out in the first round of the Australian Open: the Roman tennis player was beaten by former world number one Andy Murray in five sets, at the end of a hard-fought match that lasted five hours and ended with the scores of 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6, 6-7.
This is the worst result for the Azzurro at the Australian Open since 2019, and a big step backward since 2022: in the last edition Berrettini had managed to reach the semifinals of the Melbourne tournament.
Bad start of the match for the Roman, who loses the first sets 6-3, 6-3 against the Scot in great form. The Briton was perfect on serve and conceded very few free errors, aided by Berrettini’s very passive attitude.
The reaction finally came in the third set, the Azzurro getting the break in the fifth game and securing the partial, and then in the fourth, won by the Roman at tie-break after a real battle on court.
The spectacular fight in the fifth set (Berrettini devours a match point) ends in the super tie-break: the Scot wins 10-6 and advances to the second round.
