ATP Montpellier, Sinner beats Sonego and flies to semifinals
Sinner flies to semifinals
The Italian derby with Lorenzo Sonego goes to Jannik Sinner. The South Tyrolean tennis player had no major problems getting rid of his compatriot, defeating him in two sets (6-4 6-2).
In the first set after an initial break and counter break, Sinner operated another break at 2-2 and kept it until the final 6-4. In the second partial, the San Candido native ups the pace and Sonego can no longer resist: the number two seed on the scoreboard takes the lead and closes on the 6-2 final. Jannik thus advances to the semifinals where he will face home favorite Arthur Fils.
“We have been training, we are Davis teammates. We trained here as well, too bad we met in the quarters. It’s the first time I won a match here in Montpellier and I’m happy. It was the first match after Melbourne, Sonego had already played and won two matches. I didn’t play, I would have liked to because I had been stationary for so long. Now there is Fils, he is playing a great tournament and he is doing well on the court. He started the year well, he is aggressive and I will have to play my best,” Sinner commented after the match.
