Amancio has died, Real Madrid mourns one of its legends

The world of soccer and Real Madrid in particular mourn the passing of Amancio Amaro Varela, known simply as Amancio, the Blancos’ historic striker in the 1960s and 1970s as well as the club’s honorary president. He was 83 years old.
“Real Madrid, the president and the management are deeply saddened by the loss of Amancio Amaro, honorary president of Real Madrid, one of the great legends of the club and of world soccer,” reads a note published Tuesday by the Madrid club. “Amancio was the leader of Real Madrid in the generation following the one led by Paco Gento, the one of the five consecutive Champions Cups.
Amancio, among the titles he won in his career, won a Champions Cup, with Real Madrid in 1966, and was part of Spain’s European champions at national level two years earlier, in 1964.
