European Championships, in Istanbul not only Marcell Jacobs
European Championships in Istanbul
Nearly six hundred athletes (593) from 47 nations, four days of competitions (March 2-5), seven Olympic champions between track and platforms. The entries for the European Indoor Championships in Istanbul have been made official by European Athletics, a special edition, different from usual, with thoughts turned to the thousands of victims of the catastrophic earthquake that struck the border between Turkey and Syria. At the continental event, as known, 50 Italian athletes will participate, including Olympic 100 and 4×100 champion Marcell Jacobs. With him, the other Tokyo Olympians will be Norway’s Karsten Warholm (competing in the 400) and Jakob Ingebrigtsen (entered in the 1500 and 3000), in the long, Greece’s Miltiadis Tentoglou and Germany’s Malaika Mihambo, in the triple, Portugal’s Pedro Pablo Pichardo, and in the multiple events, Belgium’s Nafi Thiam. Among the other most-awaited stars of the event, which also includes 18 gold medalists from the last European Outdoor Championships in Munich, is undoubtedly the Dutchwoman Femke Bol, fresh off the 400-meter world record (49.26). Other big names include Ukraine’s Yaroslava Mahuchikh, British middle distance runners Keely Hodgkinson and Laura Muir, and men’s high jumper Andriy Protsenko. Confirmed waiver of pole vault dominator Armand Duplantis (Sweden).
On the Italian side, several athletes show up with a season-long accreditation in the top five. In the 60 Samuele Ceccarelli and Marcell Jacobs, in the 800 Catalin Tecuceanu, in the high Stefano Sottile, in the pole Claudio Stecchi, in the long Mattia Furlani, in the triple Emmanuel Ihemeje and Tobia Bocchi, in the weight Leonardo Fabbri.
