Paolo Bertolucci goes down flat with Matteo Berrettini
Paolo Bertolucci analyzes Berrettini’s slump in results
Paolo Bertolucci, from the columns of ‘La Gazzetta dello Sport,’ analyzed the bad start to the season of Matteo Berrettini, who was eliminated in the first round at both the Australian Open (first slam of the season) and Indian Wells (first Masters 1000 of 2023).
“I am convinced that Matteo does not feel he has arrived, and indeed still cultivates the ambition to land again in the top ten, to play the Slams, to qualify for the Finals,” said the former tennis player, now a commentator and ambassador of the discipline. “And therefore act accordingly even with drastic choices (…), thinking perhaps of increasing technical support, seeking new stimuli from another figure who does not replace but complements Santopadre. In addition, he should in my opinion pursue all possible avenues to identify the best professionals who can take care of his very delicate physical balance.”
According to Bertolucci, then, Berrettini must immediately get back on the road, even in less prestigious tournaments, to regain the feeling of victory: “It would not be a technical insult to play at the Phoenix Challenger without letting two weeks go by without a match between now and Miami. React. Right away.”
