Ferrari, now Helmut Marko is afraid: “At the end of the race as fast as Red Bull”
Some apprehension about the opponents’ growth is beginning to be felt.
Ferrari matching Red Bull in the closing laps of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku. That was the news that came on the Sunday that ended with a Red Bull one-two, and Sergio Perez first ahead of Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc. And it was precisely the latter’s growth that did not escape Helmut Marko’s notice.
“The Baku finale was alarming for us,” Marko said in fact in his end-of-race analysis for ‘ORF.’ “In the last six, seven, eight laps we saw that both Leclerc and Alonso were doing the same times as us. In the middle of the race, on the other hand, we were faster by as much as a second, but in the end the situation changed.”
“It is not true that ours was a domination and that we decided to save something,” Marko added instead about a possible Red Bull strategy. Perez asked the team if he could lower his pace, but we had to answer him that it was not possible. Both he and Verstappen drove at the maximum, and at the end of the race we were going like that because that was our level.”
