FIDAL president Stefano Mei has his say on Marcell Jacobs’ injury

FIDAL President Stefano Mei at the Golden Gala presentation had his say on yet another injury to Marcell Jacobs, who is suffering from a back problem that will prevent him from participating in the 100 meters in the very meeting that is valid for the Diamond League and scheduled for tomorrow in Florence.

“Marcell Jacobs like last year and like two years ago strongly wanted to run in the Golden Gala, you can see there is a Golden Gala curse hovering for him. Joking aside it is clear that if it turns out like it did in 2021 I feel sorry for the Florentines however we can live with it. If he had been a middle distance runner maybe he could risk it but unfortunately a sprinter, like a jumper, has to give everything right away, immediately. So even if there is the slightest risk better not to run and not to be unpredictable.”

“Better to wait an extra week-ten days and start again when you are sure you are okay,” Mei continued. “It is a back problem, let’s not make it a bigger problem. I am not worried about him, he is training. Last he wanted to race at all costs to chase the season since he wanted to do Worlds, and we saw how it went, better to stop at the slightest whiff of risk and go for the big target. I think he will do the races he has to do in the run-up to Budapest, hopefully there will be no more hiccups.”
