Paris sensation: Jannik Sinner is already out of Roland Garros
Jannik Sinner’s elimination in the second round of Roland Garros has something of a sensation: the South Tyrolean tennis player was surprised by German Daniel Altmaier in five sets (7-6 6-7 6-1 6-7 5-7) after more than five hours of play.
After two hard-fought sets, both of which ended in tie-breaks, the first in favor of the Italian, the second won by the German, Jannik seemed to have found the key to get rid of his opponent, winning the third partial 6-1 with authority and moving ahead two sets to one.
In the fourth set, however, the Italian went off the rails at the best of times: called to serve for the set, Sinner squandered two match points and was caught by his opponent, who took the match to the fifth and decisive set. Here the momentum shifted to Altmaier, who in fact pulled ahead by a break. At the decisive moment, at 5-4 and service, Altmaier also trembled with Sinner managing to get back into the match. However, the pride reaction was short-lived: the Teutonic immediately regained the break lead and closed with the final 7-5 on the fifth match point.
Sinner must thus bid farewell to Roland Garros; Altmaier will face Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov in the third round.
What is now being staged is the 122nd edition of the French Open, one of the four tournaments that are part of the Grand Slam, the second in order of time after the Australian Open, which in 2023 was won by Serbia’s Novak Djokovic among the men and Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka among the women.
