Mick Schumacher: Mercedes and beyond, Toto Wolff’s pessimism
Prospects for a return to the grid seem few.
Mick Schumacher got back behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car, participating Wednesday in tests organized in Montmeló by Pirelli to put to the test the tires that will be used in 2024. Season in which, however, he is unlikely to return to being a starting driver for any team. And confirming this is his team principal, Toto Wolff.
“His situation is difficult, and I too would like Schumacher to find the starting seat he deserves,” Wolff explained to ‘SportBild.’ However, I think the situation ahead of 2024 plays against him. Only in 2025 might some doors open again for Mick.”
Wolff’s words seem to close off the chances of Mick Schumacher taking over from Lewis Hamilton, should the seven-time world champion leave Mercedes. The Anglo-German team, moreover, appears unwilling to hand him over on loan to a friendly stable, thus confirming him as a third driver for the coming season as well.
