ATP Stuttgart: Lorenzo Sonego out in second round
After a very clear victory in the first round against a Matteo Berrettini returning to the ATP circuit after a long stop, came an unexpected defeat for Lorenzo Sonego in the second round of the Stuttgart ATP.
The 28-year-old from Turin, on a surface such as grass that he has shown he likes in the past, was beaten with a score of 7-6 6-3 in one hour and 50 minutes by Australian Christopher O’Connell, who is 33 places behind him in the world rankings, 74 versus 41.
The first set was without a break but Sonego had a total of five chances to break his opponent’s serve, in turn saving two that could have been to his detriment.
In the tie-break he went ahead by a minibreak at 4-3 but here he suffered a 4-1 break that handed the first set to O’Connell. Finally in the second set the decisive break suffered in the eighth game condemned Sonego to defeat.
