Athletics, summonses

National teams technical director Antonio La Torre has announced the list of summoned athletes for the European Team Championships in Chorzow, Poland, from Friday, June 23 to Sunday, June 25. Forty-nine athletes have been selected (25 men, 24 women) for the event that has inherited the tradition of the European Cup and that in this edition is part of the European Games 2023 program.

The Italian team includes, among others, European indoor 60-meter champion Samuele Ceccarelli who will run the 100 (and is also in the 4×100 relay group), European indoor gold medalist in the weight Zane Weir, Olympic relay champions Filippo Tortu, Fausto Desalu and Lorenzo Patta, European gold medalist in the 10.000 Yeman Crippa (in the 5,000), continental bronze medalist in the 3,000 steeplechase Osama Zoghlami, Olympic 400hs finalist Alessandro Sibilio, and Italian U20 long distance record holder Mattia Furlani. Among the women, European indoor long jump silver medalist Larissa Iapichino, Munich European bronze medalist Sara Fantini (hammer), Italian record-breakers Daisy Osakue (discus), Roberta Bruni (pole) and Ayomide Folorunso (400hs and mixed relay) will be present, 5,000 Olympic finalist Nadia Battocletti, European bronze medalist 4×100 relay runners Zaynab Dosso, Dalia Kaddari, Anna Bongiorni and Alessia Pavese, and European indoor silver medalist 4×400 relay runners Alice Mangione, Eleonora Marchiando and Anna Polinari.

Italy is among the 16 First Division teams that will compete for the trophy: the formula includes one athlete for each specialty (and one national team for each relay event) and scores of 16 to 1 based on placings. In addition, the mechanism for the long, triple and throws includes three rounds for everyone, two more rounds for the best eight and a final round for the best four, while in the pole and high hurdles a maximum of four errors per athlete can be added up. Compared to previous editions, there are no 3000 and the men’s and women’s 4×400, replaced by the mixed 4×400.
