ATP Halle: Jannik Sinner folds Lorenzo Sonego and goes into quarterfinals
The blue derby of the ATP round of 16 on the German Halle grass between Jannik Sinner, world number 9, and Lorenzo Sonego, number 39, lasted just under three hours. The former won, without ever losing a service round, with a score of 6-7 6-4 6-4.
In the first set the two blues had to save four break points apiece, Sonego all in the very long second game and Sinner three in the third, but both never lost their service and so it went to the tie-break, which the Torinese won 7-4.
In the second set it is Jannik who breaks Lorenzo’s serve in the fifth game but in the second he had saved two break points and saves another one in the sixth as well. At 5-3 the South Tyrolean went 0-40 on Sonego’s serve but he strung together five points by cancelling his three set points but in the next game Sinner extended the match to the third set by holding serve to zero.
Also in the third set it is Jannik who is the first to have to save a break point, in the second game, but on 3-3 he is the one who operates the decisive break by snatching the serve at 15 from Lorenzo, closing once again his last service turn at zero. Now Sinner in the quarterfinals will meet the winner between Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik and Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff.
