Simone Velasco new Italian champion

Surprisingly, as was last year’s won by Filippo Zana, who was absent today due to a fractured right collarbone in training, the Italian Elite men’s road race title went to Simone Velasco, a 27-year-old from Astana in his fifth career victory, including only one in a road race, the 2019 Trofeo Laigueglia.

Velasco in Comano Terme, at the end of a very demanding 227-kilometer course, beat Lorenzo Rota (Intermarché) and Kristian Sbaragli (Alpecin) in a six-man final sprint, fourth Filippo Magli (Green Project Bardiani), fifth and sixth Matteo Trentin and Davide Formolo of UAE Team Emirates.
