Jannik Sinner, Vagnozzi’s outburst: “They call you a failure…”
Sinner’s coach: “There’s a serious cultural problem, if you’re not in the Top 10 in your 20s you’re considered finished…”
Jannik Sinner’s coach, Simone Vagnozzi, in an interview with La Repubblica reiterated the Azzurro’s goals in 2023: “We want to get to the ATP Finals as starters, not as reserves as happened two years ago. We are trying to further expand Jannik’s background, it should not only be results-oriented, which of course we want. Tennis is not a sprint race like the 100 meters in athletics, but a marathon.”
“Jannik asks a lot of questions,” Vagnozzi continued, “When he called me we started talking, I explained to him what I thought might be the right path for him. Sinner is a young man who listens to the things you tell him and sometimes raises doubts. But he knows he has to improve: I coach I propose things, he player has to listen to them and he has to believe in them, because if things are done without trust they are useless.”
Vagnozzi sent the criticism back to sender: “Today there is a cultural problem, which is that if at 20 years old you have not become a top ten player you are considered a failure: it is serious. Cahill? You have to be a little elastic and intelligent: to be able to take a step back sometimes, or to be able to say the right word, or your opinion at the right time. Cahill is a very intelligent and easygoing person, we have created a good feeling and trust between us. We are lucky to see many things in the same way.”
