Wimbledon: Cecchinato lasts only one set, Jarry goes to second round
Wimbledon: Cecchinato knocked out on debut
Marco Cecchinato goes down on his Wimbledon debut. The Palermo-based tennis player goes out defeated against the better-ranked Nicolas Jarry, number 28 in the ATP rankings, with the score 4-6 6-2 6-4 6-1 in favor of the Chilean after nearly two and a half hours of play.
Despite a good start by Marco, who had pulled ahead by a set earlier in the day on Wednesday, there was little to be done when the match, which had been suspended due to darkness, resumed. Jarry evened up the set scores in no time at all and in both the third and fourth halves, he took the break lead from the start, then had an easy time in the set turns and ramped up in the last set, which closed 6-1.
Novak Djokovic is the active tennis player with the most number of Wimbledon men’s singles tournaments won: seven, one less than Switzerland’s Roger Federer, who recently retired after a career full of satisfaction. The Serbian ace triumphed on London’s grass in the 2011, 2014, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2022 editions: in last year’s final he got the better of Nick Kyrgios, who forfeited and did not participate in the tournament in 2023, in four sets.
