Died at 88 Luis Suarez, the director of the Great Inter Milan
Italian and international soccer is in mourning: Luis Suarez, known to everyone as Luisito, one of the iconic men of Helenio Herrera’s Grande Inter, winner in the 1960s of three Scudetti (1963, 1965 and 1966), two Champions Cups (1964 and 1965) and two Intercontinental Cups (1964 and 1965), has died at 88.
Born in La Coruna, Spain, on May 2, 1935, he grew up at Deportivo and then moved to Barcelona, where he played from 1954 to 1961, winning the league twice, the domestic cup twice and the Fairs Cup twice. Then he arrived on the Nerazzurri side of the Navigli, where he stayed until 1970 becoming the director of a legendary team and collecting among all competitions 333 appearances and 55 goals. Finally, from 1970 to 1973, he played three years at Sampdoria. With the Spanish national team he totaled 32 appearances and 14 goals and won the European title in 1964.
He was awarded the Ballon d’Or, which was then awarded to the best footballer of citizenship of a European country, in 1960, when he was still at Barcelona. As a coach he won an Under-21 European Championship and coached mostly in Italy, sitting on the benches of Spal and Como in Serie B and Cagliari in Serie A but also of “his” Inter, which he coached even on three occasions, in 1974-1975, from January to May 1992 and from September to October 1995.
