Tour de France: Pello Bilbao wins in Issoire, Jonas Vingegaard retains yellow jersey
Winning stroke of the kidney by Bilbao
Pello Bilbao is the winner of stage 10 of the Tour de France 2023, a 167-kilometer stage starting in Vulcania and finishing in Issoire. The Bahrain Victorious athlete thus won for the first time on the roads of the Grande Boucle, beating Georg Zimmermann (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty) and Ben O’Connor (AG2R Citroen) in a bunch sprint.
No shakeup in the general classification, which still sees Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) in the lead, and in the yellow jersey, 17 seconds ahead of Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates). Behind them, the gap: Jay Hindley (Bora-Hansgrohe), third in the standings, is 2 minutes and 40 seconds behind the Danish rider.
Wednesday’s 11th stage of the Tour, from Clermont-Ferrand to Moulins: a stage on paper suitable for sprinters, although other breakaway attempts by riders far from the top of the general classification cannot be ruled out.
The Tour de France, in 2023, has reached edition number one hundred and ten: starting from the Basque Country, from Bilbao to be precise, it will arrive in Paris, in the classic setting of the Champs Elysees, next July 23, after 21 stages. The race holder is Jonas Vingegaard, current yellow jersey in search of an encore. Holding the record for overall victories are four riders, with five wins apiece: they are Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain. A record that had been broken by Lance Armstrong (who came in at seven successes), but the well-known events involving the former American cyclist led the UCI to revoke all of his successes at the Grande Boucle.
