Carlos Alcaraz: “Even if I had lost I would have been very proud.”
Alcaraz’s words after the Wimbledon victory
Carlos Alcaraz spoke after the historic five-set victory over Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final. The world number one won the Championships for the first time in his career, clinching his second Grand Slam title.
“It’s a dream come true, it feels good to win. Even if I had lost, I would have been very proud of myself,” the Spaniard admitted before receiving the trophy. “For me, it’s incredible to enter the history of this tournament against a great champion. Playing on these stages is beautiful, I didn’t expect to make it so fast to reach this kind of situation.”
“I fell in love with grass,” Carlos says, “It’s incredible, I didn’t think I could play at this level in such a short time. I’m thrilled with the work we did with my team for the grass season-I learned quickly and I’m proud to have done it.”
A thought also for his opponent: “I have to really congratulate Novak, you inspire me so much. I started playing tennis, watching you. When I was born, you were already winning tournaments (smiling). And you are in better shape than I am.”
Admiring him in the stands was also the King of Spain: “I am very proud that you are here to cheer, it’s two times you have come and both times I won. I hope you come more often (joking).”
