Carlos Alcaraz knocks on Mats Wilander and Bjorn Borg’s door
Dizzying numbers for Alcaraz
These are mind-boggling numbers for Carlos Alcaraz. In the Open Era, that is, since 1968, only Boris Becker and Bjorn Borg were younger than he was when they won on the Wimbledon lawns. And just two other players, Swedes Mats Wilander and Borg, were able to win more than two Slams before they turned 21.
“I fell in love with grass,” Carlos recounted after defeating Djokovic. “It’s incredible, I didn’t think I could play at this level in such a short time. I’m thrilled with the work we did with my team for the grass season-I learned quickly and I’m proud to have done it.”
“I knew it was going to be really tough,” he had said instead after bowing out Berrettini. “Matteo is a great player, he played a final here and his latest performances are at a very high level. It is not easy to bounce back after losing the first set, I tried to go for more chances and stay focused. I had to avoid losing my mind.”
