World Cup, the summonses

The Glasgow 2023 World Championships, one of the first multi-events in cycling history, were unveiled today at a press conference at the Mugello Circuit. From August 3-13, the rainbow jerseys in all disciplines, including para-cycling, will be awarded.

The Italian Cycling Federation will be present at the event with 153 athletes and in more than 100 races, for a trip that promises to be challenging from a sporting and logistical point of view. Among the first titles to be awarded are the Downhill titles, Aug. 4, at the Fort Williams location, with the junior categories. The track tournament begins on the morning of Aug. 3, with qualifying in the men’s team pursuit, in which Italy will race for titles and Olympic ranking. The goal is to repeat what was achieved last year with as many as four titles won. The road tournament starts on Aug. 5 with the junior road trials and will conclude on Aug. 13 with the Women Elite trial. On Aug. 6, in addition to the elite inline trials, the marathon titles will also be awarded, the first events of the MTB in the Tweed Valley location (the elite XCO trials on Aug. 12). Also on the scene, as mentioned, is paracycling, with the track tournament running concurrently with cycling, and time trial and road, Aug. 9-13 at Dumfries #38; Galloway. The para-cycling section last year brought in six world titles. The BMX Race, an Olympic discipline, as well as Freestyle (title awarded Aug. 6) will be held on Aug. 12 and 13.

Earlier today, CTs Daniele Bennati, Marco Velo and Paolo Sangalli, at a press conference in the presence of top federal authorities, Apulia Region President Michele Emiliano and Tuscany Region President Eugenio Giani, IP President Ugo Brachetti Peretti and guest of honor Vincenzo Nibali, made official the names of the Elite and Chrono teams competing from Aug. 6.

Today’s meeting was also an opportunity to present two new federal partners who will accompany the Federation in the coming years and who have chosen to be close to our national teams already in this important rainbow commitment.

“I thank the Puglia Region and IP for the support they have decided to give us,” President Dagnoni recalled in his speech, “in such an important and decisive moment for the season. In ten days our athletes will try to achieve the result worth a career. This is the most important step of the season for many of them and I am sure they will try their best to confirm our country at the top of the movement. These World Championships also take on a special value because they are fundamental from an Olympic perspective, both for international rankings and from the point of view of research and materials. For this reason I would also like to thank the many technical partners who in these months are working hard to put our athletes in the conditions to perform well. Together we represent Italy in the world and this is an additional reason for pride and spur to put all our efforts to achieve the results we have set ourselves.”

Apulia Regional President Michele Emiliano spoke at the press conference, “That #WeAreInPuglia on the jersey of the Italian national team is a sign of how much Apulia feels part of a history and how much our region is banking on bicycle tourism for its future. A beautiful story that comes through the ties built between the Apulia Region and the Cycling Federation over many years of work. An experience that brings my mind back to many significant moments, for example to 2009, when the first Apulian cycling school recognized by the Italian Federation was born, which then became a national excellence, thanks to the synergy with the great Franco Ballerini. Apulia continues to invest in the creation of cycling and cycle-tourism routes, fully espouses the philosophy that accompanies this great sport, rejoices in seeing so many young people get passionate about two wheels and great champions such as Moser, Argentin, Fondriest, Bugno, Cipollini, Bettin, Ballan love our land to live by bicycle. I thank President Cordiano Dagnoni, the whole extraordinary FCI team, the Puglia Region, Pugliapromozione and Tommaso De Palma, who made this collaboration possible. There is a feeling that comes through the harmony between people and between institutions that set this in motion.”

President of the Tuscany region Eugenio Giani: “We are proud that the Italian national cycling team has decided to train in Tuscany, in Mugello, exalting our region and the strong link with cycling. I think of our champion Vincenzo Nibali and coach Daniele Bennati and the unforgettable Tuscans who have written its history: Gino Bartali, Franco Ballerini, Gastone Nencini, Alfredo Martini. From Tuscany the best wishes to the Azzurri!”.

IP President Ugo Brachetti Peretti said, “IP is happy to accompany blue cycling in its growth. This year our Group turns 90 years old. A long history of commitment and passion, which has energized the mobility of Italians. Supporting national sport has always been in our hearts: this year we will return to it, starting with cycling, to tell together with the athletes the values that guide us.”

Antonio Mazzeo president of the Regional Council of Tuscany: “Tuscany is a land of culture, hospitality, tourism and also a land of sports, with many world-class sportsmen and athletes. But even more so an ideal land for cycling. And when I say that, I think not only of these outstanding sportsmen and women, who I hope can give us good results in Scotland, I think of the thousands of fans we pass on our roads everywhere.”
