Jannik Sinner and three other Italians waiting for Toronto’s draw for the draw for the Toronto draw board
Tonight at 10 p.m. Italian time will be the main draw for the main draw of the Canadian Open, the sixth Masters 1000 of the season, which this year, as far as men are concerned, will be played in Toronto next week alternating with Montreal. The tournament will mark the return to the court of world No. 8 Jannik Sinner after reaching the semifinals at Wimbledon last month.
In addition to the South Tyrolean, who will turn 22 on August 16, three other Italians will be in the main draw: Lorenzo Musetti, Matteo Berrettini and Lorenzo Sonego, while Matteo Arnaldi will play the qualifiers. Otherwise, the only player absent from the world’s top 20 will be Novak Djokovic, but he will return the following week in Cincinnati.
This is a golden opportunity for Sinner to consolidate his current sixth place in the Race rankings, which will qualify the best eight tennis players on the planet for the ATP Finals at the end of the year in Turin. Sinner currently has 3175 points in this ranking, which takes into account only 2023 results, and is 885 points ahead of the ninth-ranked player, U.S. Taylor Fritz.
In short, taking into account that there is still one Slam and four Masters 1000s to go before the end of the season, plus the other 500 and 250 tournaments, qualification for Jannik is still far from certain, but at the same time there is a good chance that it will come, since, as shown by a research carried out by Ubitennis, from 2010 to last year the eighth Finals qualifier has collected, on average, 3552 points, which is only 377 more than Jannik has so far, but he also has another goal, between Toronto and Cincinnati: to win his first career 1000 after two lost finals, both in Miami.
