Filippo Ganna, super comeback to win gold

Filippo Ganna won the rainbow gold medal in track cycling, individual pursuit specialty, at the end of an outstanding final on the track in Glasgow, venue of the 2023 World Championships: the Verbanese rider beat Britain’s Daniel Bigham in the final by just 54 thousandths, at the end of an incredible comeback.

The idol of the home fans tried from the start to push as hard as possible to create a wide gap between himself and the Italian champion, and actually got to a two-second lead with one kilometer still to go. In the final laps, however, Ganna went wild and accomplished such a feat that he drew the admiration of the British ppublic.

The specialty is confirmed to be a harbinger of medals for Italy: in the final for bronze, in fact, Jonathan Milan won and convinced, leaving only crumbs to Ivo Oliveira, who arrived more than two seconds behind. It is the sixth gold in the individual pursuit at the Track Cycling World Championships for Ganna, who has also triumphed in the specialty in London (2016), Apeldoorn (2018), Pruszkow (2019), Berlin (2020) and St. Quentin-et-Yvelines (2022).

For Milan, it is the first rainbow bronze: he previously won, in the individual pursuit, silver in Roubaix in 2021 and St. Quentin-et-Yvelines in 2022.
