Jorge Lorenzo gets out of line on Alex Rins and Yamaha
During an interview with the microphones of the Spanish newspaper “As,” former Ducati and Honda centaur Jorge Lorenzo commented on the recent officialdom that has arrived at Yamaha, namely the hiring of Alex Rins in place of Franco Morbidelli starting with the 2024 season.
“The situation of Rins’ arrival at Yamaha is very different from mine. It is true that 2007 was difficult for Yamaha, but in previous years he had won and had a good period. Now, however, it is having one of the worst times in the last 20 years, because the bike is not competitive and the team has to get a move on to try to reverse this trend,” the Mallorcan began.
“I think it’s a good deal for both sides, because in terms of riding Rins should be fine on the Yamaha. With Suzuki he won races and even fought for a World Championship, and that bike was similar to the M1 because it had an inline four-cylinder engine, so he has experience with this type of engine. With Honda, I was surprised by his success in Austin. I didn’t expect to see him win, but the circumstances were on his side, on a circuit that suits the Honda better,” added the five-time world champion.
“The important thing now is for him to fully recover from the injury, then whether the future will be positive or not, that will depend a lot on Yamaha, because no one can win with an invalid bike. If they give him a competitive M1, he will surely be able to fight for the top positions, although I see the future of MotoGp very red-tinged for the next three or four years,” Jorge Lorenzo quipped.
