Tommy Paul warns Jannik Sinner: “Next up.”
Tommy Paul on the hunt for another excellent scalp in Toronto after his surprise success against world number one Carlos Alcaraz. The U.S. tennis player in the semifinals wants to repeat the feat against Jannik Sinner, world number eight and the last Top 10 tennis player left in the competition in Canada.
“For me this win against Alcaraz is important, but I am one who thinks about one match at a time, and now I just focus on the next opponent. At the end of the week I will then tell you what my balance is. Hopefully that will happen on Sunday,” he said at the press conference.
Paul warned the South Tyrolean, “I feel very good at the moment. I like to play against anyone who represents a good challenge. Obviously Alcaraz is at the moment the best player in the world, and when I play these matches in such big stadiums with the big guys I like it a lot. So I would say it’s fun.”
The semifinal he reached at the Australian Open was a turning point: “It gave me self-confidence, but tennis is a sport where from week to week a lot changes. You often see players win titles and then lose in the first round in the next tournament. The important thing is consistency. Obviously getting big results in big tournaments helps you, but every week is a new challenge.”
