Davis Cup: fate is in Italy’s hands
Davis Cup: fate è in the hands of Italy
After the initial scare, due to the narrow defeat against Canada, and the thrilling victory against Chile, Italy is still in the running to clinch qualification for the Davis Cup Finals in Malaga. Indeed, the Azzurri have their destiny in their own hands (thanks also to the Canadians’ success over the South Americans): all it takes is one win, between the two singles matches and the doubles against Sweden, already eliminated, to enter the world’s top eight.
It starts at 3 p.m. at the Arena Domus in Bologna with Lorenzo Sonego, who will likely take on Elias Ymer, number 175 in the world rankings. Then it will be the turn of either Matteo Arnaldi or Lorenzo Musetti (official choices of captain Volandri will be announced an hour from the start) to presumably challenge Leo Borg, world ranking number 334.
As for the doubles, Sonego and Musetti gave guarantees in the match against Chile and could be reintroduced, pending understanding of the physical condition of Andrea Vavassori and Simone Bolelli.
Beyond the choices of Filippo Volandri, the qualification of the National Team è a step away and would be crucial in view of the Finals, where the Azzurri should recover the great absentees of this group stage: Jannik Sinner and Matteo Berrettini.
