Italy gold and silver in European mixed time trial
Italy's mixed lineup of Edoardo Affini, Mattia Cattaneo, Matteo Sobrero, Elena Cecchini, Vittoria Guazzini and Soraya Paladin won the silver medal in the Team Relay Mixed Elite Trial at the European Cycling Championships in the Netherlands. The gold è went to France, and the bronze to Germany.
The Azzurri were first at the intermediate, after the men’s trio test, with a 20" lead over the French, but then the three girls from beyond the Alps, in the rain, reversed the situation and soì France eventually got the better of Italy by 4 seconds.
Earlier, Italy, again in the mixed time trial, had won gold at the junior level, with Andrea Bessega, Luca Giaimi, Andrea Montagner, Eleonora La Bella, Alice Toniolli and Federica Venturelli, who had covered the 38.4-kilometer test in 48'14"15.
Particularly impressive was the girls’ performance, who made up for a fall by their three colleagues that had slowed the blue trio. Silver to Germany, off by 25", and bronze to France, at 42".
