Dream Italy, Davis Cup is ours
Jannik Sinner dà the decisive point: Davis Cup to Italy after 47 years
Italy won the Davis Cup, the top tennis competition for nations, for the second time in its history: è it was Jannik Sinner who gave the Azzurri the decisive point, beating Alex de Minaur 6-3, 6-0, after Matteo Arnaldi had in turn defeated Alexei Popyrin in three sets.
After a very early study phase, Sinner already won a break lead in the third game, resisting the comeback attempts of his opponent, number 12 in the ATP rankings, to whom he also nullified a crucial break ball during the eighth game, before flying to win the set 6-3.
There was no history, however, in a second set entirely colored blue: Jannik Sinner è overwhelming and leaving very little initiative to his Australian opponent, who surrendered without winning a single game. Two match points are wasted but the third è the good one to close the match: the most prestigious salad bowl in the world è in the hands of the Azzurri.
The success of Jannik Sinner, Matteo Arnaldi, Lorenzo Sonego, Lorenzo Musetti and Simone Bolelli (the only one not to take the court but present in Malaga among the summoned players), led by captain Filippo Volandri, thus matches the historic one achieved in Chile in 1976 by Corrado Barazzutti, Paolo Bertolucci, Adriano Panatta and Tonino Zugarelli, captained by Nicola Pietrangeli.
