Next Gen ATP Finals, too many fils for Cobolli: derby with Nardi decisive
Next Gen ATP Finals: Flavio Cobolli vs Arthur Fils 1-4 2-4 2-4
Second bad day for Italian tennis players at the Next Gen ATP Finals in Jeddah. After Luca Nardi’s loss to Dominic Stricker, Flavio Cobolli also went down, succumbing sharply to Frenchman Arthur Fils, the number one seeded seed, who imposed himself in three sets 4-1 4-2 4-2 in almost an hour of play.
Nothing was possible for the Roman tennis player against a blistering Fils, who led from the first to the last point. The Frenchman, in fact, got the break already in the second game, quickly closing the first partial 4-1. Also in the second set Fils è ran away immediately, winning it 4-2. The script è continued in the third set with the transalpine’s break in the opening, but a prideful reaction by Cobolli put the score back on even footing. The balance, forò, è was short-lived becauseé Fils è came back immediately ahead and closed 4-2.
Cobolli will play for qualification to the semifinals with compatriot Luca Nardi, who has not yet been eliminated: in case of the latter’s success and simultaneous victory of Fils over Stricker, the finish of three players tied on points (in this case Cobolli, Nardi and Stricker, ed.) involves either the best percentage of sets won or the best percentage of games won.
